How does this steps to calories calculator convert steps into calories?
A step count alone doesn't tell you anything about energy burned — it needs to be converted into distance and effort first. The calculator does this in two stages.
Stage one: steps to distance. Your stride length depends on your height. A widely used estimate sets average step length at roughly 0.414 times your height, so someone who is 1.75 m tall takes a step of about 0.72 m. Multiply that by your step count to get total distance covered. This is why height matters — without it, 10,000 steps could represent very different distances depending on stride.
Stage two: distance and pace to calories. The tool uses the MET (Metabolic Equivalent of Task) method:
