About us
Helping you understand the calories behind every step
Steps to Calories is a free, instant calculator that converts your daily step count into a personalized estimate of calories burned. Whether you track 5,000 steps on a slow morning or 18,000 steps on a long hike, the tool adjusts for your body weight, walking pace, and terrain so the number reflects your walk — not a generic average.
Our mission
Make walking data feel useful and honest. No sign-ups, no app downloads, and no ads — just a quick, accurate conversion you can trust.
How we calculate
We use stride length from your height, your pace to set a MET intensity value, and the standard energy formula Calories = MET × 3.5 × bodyweight (kg) / 200 × minutes. Terrain adds realism.
Why we built it
Fitness trackers show steps, but rarely the energy behind them. We wanted a fast, transparent tool that anyone can open and use in seconds — then close and go walk.
Who it's for
Walkers, hikers, and anyone curious about their daily activity — from beginners tracking 5,000 steps to power walkers chasing 18,000.
Who runs this site
Steps to Calories is an independent project built and maintained by a small team of walking enthusiasts and web developers who wanted a clearer alternative to the generic "steps to calories" charts found online. We are not a medical practice and we do not claim clinical credentials; instead, our expertise is in translating published exercise-science research into a tool that is easy to use and honest about its limits.
The energy figures come from the Compendium of Physical Activities MET values for walking, combined with the widely used equation Calories = MET × 3.5 × bodyweight (kg) / 200 × minutes. Stride length is estimated from height using standard ratios, and terrain multipliers reflect the extra effort of inclines and stairs. Every number the calculator shows is an estimate, not a measurement — individual metabolism, fitness, temperature, and load all shift the real figure. We review the formula and the reference tables whenever readers write in with a correction.
Nothing on this site is medical advice. If you are managing a health condition, planning significant weight loss, or returning to exercise after injury, speak with a qualified healthcare professional before relying on these numbers. The site is free to use and supported by advertising, which never influences the formulas or the content we publish.
What you can do here
