The short version

Steps to Calories is a free walking calorie calculator. We do not require an account, and the numbers you enter — your step count, weight, height, pace, and terrain — are saved only in your own browser so the form is pre-filled the next time you visit. We never send those values to a server, never sell your data, and have no way to link a calculation to you as a person.

Information we collect

We aim to collect as little as possible:

  • Calculator inputs. Step count, weight, height, pace, terrain, and unit preference. These are stored in your browser's localStorage and never transmitted to us.
  • Theme preference. Whether you chose light or dark mode, also kept inlocalStorage.
  • Contact form submissions. If you contact us, only the name, email, and message you choose to send reach us — and only because your email client sends them to us directly.
  • Usage analytics. We may use privacy-respecting analytics to understand which pages are visited and how the calculator is used in aggregate. These tools do not receive your calculator inputs.

How we use information

Aggregate, anonymous analytics help us improve the calculator, fix bugs, and decide which step counts and features to add. Contact messages help us reply to your questions and corrections. We never sell your personal information and we never upload your calculator inputs anywhere.

Cookies and local storage

We use your browser's localStorage to remember your calculator inputs and theme choice between visits, and a small lang-pref cookie to remember the language you picked. In addition, advertising and analytics partners described below may set their own cookies. You can clear or block cookies and site data at any time from your browser settings, and the calculator will simply start fresh.

Advertising and Google AdSense

This site may display advertising served by Google AdSense and other third-party advertising partners. Please note the following:

  • Third-party vendors, including Google, use cookies to serve ads based on your prior visits to this website or other websites.
  • Google's use of advertising cookies (including the DoubleClick cookie) enables it and its partners to serve ads to you based on your visit to this and/or other sites on the Internet.
  • You may opt out of personalised advertising by visiting Google Ads Settings, or opt out of third-party vendors' use of cookies at aboutads.info/choices.
  • Third-party ad networks may collect IP address, device and browser information, and general location in order to serve and measure ads. They do not receive your calculator inputs, which never leave your device.
  • Visitors in the European Economic Area, the UK and Switzerland are shown a consent choice for personalised advertising where required by law, and ads are served non-personalised when consent is not given.

Google's own handling of data is described in the Google Privacy & Terms page.

Third-party services

The site loads fonts from a public font provider (Google Fonts). That provider may log a request in order to serve the font. Aside from standard web infrastructure (hosting, analytics), advertising partners described above, and your own email provider when you use the contact form, we do not share data with third parties.

Children's privacy

The calculator is a general-purpose tool and is not directed at children under 13. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has sent us personal data, contact us and we will delete it.

Your choices

You can clear saved inputs and theme at any time by clearing your browser's site data for this site. You can avoid sharing any personal information by leaving the contact form unused. The calculator itself never asks for a name or email.

Changes to this policy

We may update this Privacy Policy as the tool evolves. The "last updated" date above reflects the most recent revision. Continued use after a change means you accept the updated policy.
